Young Enterprise Scheme - Mid year orals and presentations May Thursday 20th 2004
The Young Enterprise Scheme ran the Oral Presentations and Product Launch on the 20th May 2004, at the Stairs Function centre. The concept behind the Oral presentations is for the Y.E.S. companies to present and sell their products to potential investors. Presentations were made by Verdon College (school re-entering the programme) – Southland Saviours Inc., whose product is ‘Ultimately Southland Gift Packs’. The two teams from James Hargest High School- 45 Degrees South and Pep Talk – 45 Degrees South are producing a booklet on ‘Southland Hot Spots’ aimed at tourists and visitors coming to the South. Pep Talk are producing student diaries with one of their target markets being the S.I.T. Southland Girls High School’s product is also aimed at the student – they are doing printed ‘hoodies’ (hooded sweatshirts). Menzies College are producing calendars featuring stunning scenery from the local area and newcomers Gore High School have successfully begun their first year in the programme by producing funky looking school house badges.
Each team gave a five minute speech based on the business plan and the company’s expected outcomes for the year. The presentations were of a very high standard which made it extremely difficult for the judges who spent a bit of time agonising over the award’s categories not to mention the Oral presentation winner.
The awards and winners were as follows:
ANZ - Best Display Stand – Southland Girls High School – Team Kia Kaha
Environment Southland - Most Environmentally Friendly Product/Service – Verdon College – Southland Saviours Inc.
BDO Spicers – Best Business Plan – Menzies – Seiznem
Chamber of Commerce – Most Innovative Marketing Strategy – Verdon College – Southland Saviours Inc.
Chamber of Commerce – Best Oral Presentation – James Hargest – PEP Talk.
If these students are the business people of Southland’s future then I can assure you we are in good hands. Even with the daunting prospect of presenting in front of an audience of some ninety people (teachers, parents, mentors and judges from the business community), these students displayed enthusiasm, passion, excitement, team spirit, confidence and very polished professional images. School uniforms were proudly worn with shirts tucked in, blazers buttoned and ties straightened, while some companies had invested in corporate uniforms to take them through the year when presenting at various marketing/ school functions etc. These guys are out to make some big impressions in the business community and we at the Chamber of Commerce wish them every success.
