Young Enterprise Regional Awards October Thursday 20th 2004
Verdon College have made a dramatic comeback to the Chamber of Commerce Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) for the 2004 year by scooping four of the six awards presented at the YES Regional Awards on Thursday 21 October. Verdon have not had a team entered in the programme since 1999. ‘Southland Saviours’ was the team registered for the YES 2004 year. The awards won by the seven student directors were the McIntyre Dick & Partners – Innovation Award, the ANZ Bank Financial Management Award, the Wrightsons – Best All Round Company and Victoria Batt (Verdon) took out the Chamber of Commerce Enterpriser of the Year award. Other awards presented on the night were the Wrightsons – Top Rural School which went to Gore High School and also Paul Stevens from Menzies College was presented with the Colin Smith Memorial Trophy for his contribution to the YES programme.
The guest speaker for the evening was Dayle Belcher, President of the Foveaux Toastmasters Club. Dayle gave tips on ‘making an effective presentation’ to the general audience and gave specific advice for the benefit of the Verdon and the James Hargest team (Pep Talk), who are both going through to the National Awards in Wellington on Wednesday, 27 October.
COC congratulate all the teams who participated in the Young Enterprise Scheme this year. The comments made from student directors reinforce the benefits of the programme in relation to young people entering the business arena. Dealing with outside influences to their ‘business’ and out of their control, was an area they hadn’t realised the impacts of. Coming up against issues such as human management, suppliers, stock control and irate customers, all became factors that required the directors to work through solutions and possible outcomes. They also indicated they intended to put the skills learnt into practice some time in their foreseeable future.
