Overview
Young Enterprise Scheme
One of the ways we that can contribute to a positive future for business in Southland, is to promote and educate entrepreneurship through younger generations. We do this by coordinating the New Zealand Enterprise Trust ‘Young Enterprise Scheme’ at Senior High School Level.
| |
Chamber Southland first started this program in 1990 through the vision and dedication of the then President Colin Smith.
We continue this today by employing a staff member who runs the program as part of their roll in Chamber Southland.
The Young Enterprise experience involves students in years 12/13 in the process of effective decision-making within the business environment.
Throughout the school year the students take ownership and operate their own company model as though it was operating in the outside world.
The students:
Hold Directors meetings - producing a mission statement with key performance indicators, budget analyses, profit and loss sheets, and direct the Company’s success.
Form a company – rasing capital by share issue.
Produce a product and or service – sell this to produce profit.
Pay a return to shareholders and pay ‘tax’
This is done with real money in real time.
Throughout the program there is substantial training and mentoring begining with the 'E Day' Director's training program.
The first awards are The Oral Awards which are held June 12 (2008) followed in July with a public Trade Fair and concluding with the finial end of year awards and presentations in October.
For those who wish they can sit the Young Enterprise Exam which have NZQA Qualification standards giving credits in NCEA, University Entrance and NZIM managment papers .
Those that take up this challenge are always rewarded with adventure and those that take responsibility for their own company and for their own decisions are the ones who experience the greatest success. Students learn and get prepared for the business world by doing and accepting the challenge that the scheme can provide.
