Young Enterprise Scheme
One of the ways that we contribute to a positive future for business in Southland, is to promote entrepreneurship through years 12 and 13 Senior High School. We do this by coordinating the Lion Foundation ‘Young Enterprise Scheme’. During the course of one year, students form a company and create a new product or service which they introduce to the market. |
 |
This is not a textbook course –
Students invest real money by raising shareholdings in their business, produce real products or services and deal with real profit or loss. They must pay tax on their profit, and submit an annual report and tax return before their school year ends.
The programme allows students to have a go at running a business within a safe environment supported by a formal process, the regional co-ordinator, their teachers and mentors.
Students develop individual strengths including problem solving, negotiation skills, communication and interpersonal relations, initiative and persistence, self-management, co-operation, numeracy including budgeting, planning, reporting and managing risk and how to work in a team
Chamber Southland started this program in 1990 through the vision and dedication of the then President Colin Smith and today, more than 120 Southland students are taking part in the YES programme each year from seven Southland schools.
 |
The YES programme has expanded to include technology classes, in a programme called Enterprising Technology and from 2011, Play it Strange and Young Enterprise Trust combined the production of an original song album with the Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme. Please contact us for more information on these two new initiatives. |
The program has substantial training and mentoring with key regional events through-out the year including:
'E Day' Director's Training
The Oral Presentation & Mid Year Awards
Trade Fair
Final End of Year Awards and Presentations.
The Young Enterprise Scheme has qualification pathways attached to it. In addition to the course requirements (10 credit equivalents), students may elect to sit the Young Enterprise Exam (14 credit equivalents) to achieve the Young Enterprise Certificate (a NZQA Level 3 Qualification). Students are able to use the course requirements as a “top up” towards their NCEA credits OR apply for NZ Institute of Management paper 836.
