NZAS Aluminium Smelter Factory Visit - February Tuesday 17th 2004
The Chamber of Commerce’s Business After Five for February was a tour of the New Zealand Aluminium Smelter Paul Hemburrow, Manager Reduction South MRU, guided Chamber members around the site, giving an informative talk on the plant’s operation. Back at the administration offices, Paul delivered a power point presentation of Tiwai’s history, its growth through the years through expansion, growth in production, changes of the workforce and changes in the Health and Safety procedures. These changes have impacted hugely on not only production level but the whole culture and atmosphere of Tiwai. Despite the workforce being half of years gone by, their growth in production per employee is now 40% higher than their overseas competitors. Environmental issues are still very much top priority and ways to improve power efficiency for the future are being investigated constantly.
The Chamber of Commerce would like to thank Paul and NZAS for providing such an informative overview of the Tiwai operation and also the delicious catering.
