Shearing South BA5 May Wednesday 26th 2004
In the centre of Invercargill, Kevin Stevenson from Shearing South has created a visitor attraction unique to the Shearing Industry of New Zealand. Chamber of Commerce members were taken through a journey of the history of shearing within New Zealand featuring local areas and local shearing gangs.
Shearing morabilia, photos, static displays, graphic presentations, a ‘Shearer’s Hall of Fame’ and audio presentations make up the environment Kevin is portraying to visitors and tourists to Southland. A mini picture theatre shows a documentary called “150 years of Pain, Sweat and Shears” which clearly illustrates the hard slog of the girls and the blokes of the shearing sheds. Kevin generously supplied wine and oysters which added to the Shearing South Experience and very much appreciated by Chamber Members who were looking a bit sheepish by the end of the evening. Thank you Kevin for ‘shearing’ this with us.
