Fonterra
| September07 A fashion parade it certainly was not – unless you wished to judge the pristine condition of paintwork, stainless steel vats, pipes – they would all have won a prize. The human viewers left something to be desired. Kitted out in white shower caps, overalls, gumboots, safety glasses and ear plugs, I think we may have looked more like some obscure species from ’Dr Who’, but interest certainly overrode pride as 45 members of the Chamber toured the Fonterra plant at Edendale. |
Keith Mason, Site Manager gave a fascinating overview of the plant, its capacity and products. Edendale is the third largest manufacturing plant of Fonterra, and the figures certainly bear it out.
| From approximately 613 suppliers in Southland, the plant can processes up to 11.2 million litres of milk into Milk Powder, Cheese, AMF (Anhydrous Milkfat), Lactose and Whey Cheese and Casein. Most of the product is exported and production varies according to the country of destination. | |
Our tour was split into three groups and each toured a different plant. The sheer size of the plant is overwhelming and it is a credit to technology and the highly skilled operations team.
 | Once everyone had returned to their normal mode of dress and we could recognize each other again, we were treated to an outstanding ‘taster’ of many varieties of cheeses which slipped very easily down the throat with some wine and fruit. |
Melanie Isaacs, Site Administrator was involved with the main part of the organising of the evening with Keith and the ‘Tour Guides’ they turned on a memorable evening.
