Blue River Dairy
February 2008 saw 25 lucky people who managed to
get their registrations in really fast gathered for a most
informative, enlightening and gastronomically satisfying evening.
We will never look at sheep in the same way again!

Felice Andreae, Sales and Marketing Manager for Blue River
Dairy Products gave a most interesting presentation on the company,
and then groups were given a tour of the powder plant by Shirley
King. It is completely mind-blowing to see what this company is
producing from such a small area. It is a little like the story of
the Little Red Hen – they milk their own sheep, transport the milk
to the factory, manufacture the milk into products and market the
end products to the consumer. |
This vertically integrated system ensures the highest quality
is met through quality control at each level of the supply chain,
and in fact, many of their cheeses have already won awards. Blue
River Dairy Products have approximately 150 outlets nationwide in
the domestic market, and are exporting product to USA, EU, Middle
East, Asia and Australia.

| Then came another highlight – the tasting part!! We sampled
fetas, cheddars and haloumi…..and no way could we pick a favorite,
they are all just so good. We drank some beautifully matched wine,
or orange juice depending on your palate. |
For those that have not tried haloumi – it is a treat that needs
to be tried. Felice cooked up many panfuls of it and it disappeared
in a trice. Then, to complete the feast, we got to sample ice-cream
made from sheep’s milk. What a beautiful white, pure ice-cream!!
Sheep milk contains almost twice the percentage of calcium,
phosphorous, iron and zinc and also more of the percentage of AEC
and B complex vitamins compared to cow milk. Purchases were made at
the end of the night, and what a dilemma that produced – which to
choose!!

The lucky draw for a wonderful box of
cheeses
was won by Pip Jopp of Smart.
Well done Pip – we are all envious!!

As well as the products above, Blue River Dairy Products produce
yoghurt and various cheese spreads. Cheeses can be purchased
directly from Blue River Dairy Products in Nith Street, as well as
various outlets through the city, so if you haven’t tried their
product yet, do search it out.
Sincere thanks to Felice and Shirley for their time and for being
such wonderful hosts. Everyone was, and still is, waxing
enthusiastic over the evening. We look forward to updates
on latest products!
