Mid April saw the temperatures cool and the evenings drawing in,
so it was perhaps an appropriate time to meet at the White Heron
Function Centre to hear about Dunedin based company, SilkBody.
SilkBody, a clothing design and manufacturing company was
launched in the early 1990’s and the Southland Export Forum along
with NZ Trade and Enterprise, combined to bring SilkBody owner,
David Cooper to town.
 |
David gave an overview of the company’s inception and some
interesting insight to some of the challenges faced by a Kiwi based
firm that bases their manufacture and product sourcing out of
Northern China. The unique properties of Silk and it’s combination
with Merino wool has been a major point of difference for
SilkBody,
|
and the contemporary design of the garments, has seen it become a
well established brand in Australasia, with movement now into the
European sector.
Photos of the actual manufacture of the raw silk in China gave
guests a sense of the sheer magnitude of the Chinese supply
operation also. A single silk worm Cocoon can contain a single
strand of silk, up to 1.5km in length!
The SilkBody website gives a more detailed history of the
company with access to local stockists and their online shop.
Well worth a look, as the site also illustrates the uncluttered and
professional “Look” that David say’s is essential for their
brand, particularly now that the European market |
 |
is becoming aware of the SilkBody clothing range.
Thanks to the Southland Export Forum and New Zealand Trade and
Enterprise for their help with this event, and also to the White
Heron who hosted our guests.
It was great to see a good turnout of members. These events only
happen with the involvement of individuals, so thanks again for
attending this Southland Export Institute and Chamber of Commerce
showcase.
