In April, the Otago Polytechnic offered Southlanders an exciting
opportunity to learn how to capitalise on the skills acquired
throughout individual careers.

Many of us have gained a wealth of knowledge in our working
lives, but often these experiences don’t translate to a formal
qualification and that is where the Otago Polytechnics APL
programmes can offer some very tangible benefits. |
During the information evening, guests heard how the programme will
assess prior experience and transform these informal, but very real
experiences into formal qualifications…
After an in depth interview (often via phone) with one of the
APL team, an assessment of skills is then matched against a range
of National Certificate and Degree requirements.
Certainly an eye opening and most informative session with most
guests soon realising that a formal qualification is a very real
and attainable goal.
From an individuals perspective, the APL programme helps develop
career pathways, fast tracks other studies in the future and
for

employers who help staff participate in the programme, this is a
great opportunity to increase motivation for staff to gain industry
relevant qualifications.
