NZAS Tiwai Smelter
| April 2011- Business After 5 Networking session was held at the NZAS Tiwai Smelter this week. A full bus of around 45 enjoyed a very informative session including an overview of operations, from Ryan Cavanagh G.M. and a tour by bus around the site. |

A great opportunity for members to look around Southland’s largest export earner. Thanks to the NZAS team for making this possible.
The Tiwai Point Aluminium Smelter has been noted as providing a significant boost for the country's overall trade balance, and as well as being one of the country's largest industrial sites, the NZAS Tiwai Smelter is NZ’s number 1 export earner.
| An interesting point to note from the tour, has been an increase in the production levels despite a reduction in the workforce number on site, due in some part to emerging technologies, but also through streamlining of production methods and staff up skilling in their various departments. |

The NZAS accident rate has also undergone somewhat of a transformation in the last few years, from literally hundreds of lost time incidents yearly to practically zero.In fact, had our tour been a week earlier, we would have been speaking of zero accidents on site, which is quite some achievement.
Thanks to Andrea, Jason and Kate and also Ryan Cavanagh GM for hosting our visit. It was a great chance to see parts of this Southland production icon in operation.
