Youth pay rates victory for Bradford
Green MP Sue Bradford has won a major victory in her bid to
abolish youth pay rates.
Her private members' bill will have its first airing tonight (Feb
22nd), but Ms Bradford has already been guaranteed it will proceed
to its next stage.
She has won support from Labour, United Future, the Maori Party and
New Zealand First, for the bill to go to select committee.
Ms Bradford says her bill is about ending the sort of
discrimination that used to apply to women who were paid 30 to 40
percent less than men for doing the same job. She says it is
ridiculous that 16 and 17-year-olds are often doing the same work
as adults, but are being paid significantly less.
