Overview
Many small businesses and non-profit organisations rely on
volunteer directors or trustees, who bring enthusiasm and technical
knowledge to the table, but lack experience at a governance level.
So it’s hardly surprising that building and maintaining an
effective Board is no easy task: boundaries between governance and
management get blurred, frustration sets in, and politics takes
over from policy and strategy.
This half day module explains the basics needed to become a top
performing Board, in a clear and practical way.
Workshop content
• Why should a small to medium company have a Board of
Directors?
• Choosing members for your Board
o Internal appointees
o External appointees
• The owner – Board relationship
• Who should chair the Board?
• Getting the best from your Board
o An independent view of operations
o A sounding board for the MD/CEO

Productivity Improvements
By the end of
the course, you will have a good appreciation of the key factors
for best Board performance and practice; the topics and issues top
Boards concentrate on; how to recognize the boundary between
governance and management; your legal obligations as a Director or
Trustee; how to know when the organisation is on track (and what to
do if it isn’t), and how effective Board meetings are
conducted.
