The Southland Export Forum hosted an evening with New Zealand Trade
and Enterprise, Thursday, 19th August, on China Export Marketing
Opportunities. The guest presenter was Grant Fuller from New
Zealand Trade and Enterprise.
Grant has been a Trade Development Manager in Beijing from 1994
-1996, Trade Commissioner in Singapore, 1997-1999 and most
recently, Trade Commissioner in Shanghai, April 2000-July 2004.
Grant has returned from Shanghai to take up the position as Sector
Manager Wood Products at New Zealand Trade and Enterprise, based in
Wellington.
Grants presentation included an overview of East China and
Shanghai, major sectors of opportunity, market entry options
available to New Zealand exporters, hints and tips of doing
business in China and the future of China and the implications for
New Zealand exporters.
Grant advised that if you were contemplating exporting to China
to do your homework thoroughly. Be prepared to spend at least 3 or
4 trips researching possibilities. He suggested to target one city
and define a target market, as in Shanghai alone you will find 15
million residents and each day an influx of 3 million migrant
workers and 1 million tourists move in.
