New Zealand Exporters products could be in ship fire: (posted 30/3/2006)A major fire started last week and was still burning Monday on the Hyundai Fortune, voyage 333W, which departed Singapore March 15 and is scheduled to arrive Rotterdam March 30. Fire fighting and salvage teams are still battling the blaze and if successful, it is likely the vessel will be taken to a port in the vicinity of the Persian Gulf where any undamaged cargo will be discharged. New Zealand exporters could be involved if their cargo was trans-shipped through Singapore on route to Europe. The total value of cargo on board is estimated to be US$500m. This will be a massive cargo claim as at this early stage one third of the containers on board this 5,500TEU vessel are thought to have been affected by fire and smoke damage. Undamaged cargo will be subject to significant General Average and Salvage claims. If you have clients with cargo on board this vessel we recommend you contact your cargo insurer urgently for assistance.
