Shop Trading Amendment
Current situation:
Under current law only shops in Taupo and Queenstown are exempt
from non trading on Easter Friday and Monday. All garden shops, can
trade Sunday only, restaurants, food takeaways bars and some other
shops such as dairy’s and petrol stations can trade with some goods
restrictions.
What's happened
There have been 2 private member bills drawn from the ballot to
amend the current legislation.
1. Jacqui Dean, National – calls for Central Government
legislation to allow shop trading on Good Friday and Easter Sunday,
in communities with significant tourist visitor numbers.
2. Steve Chadwick, Labour – calls for District Territorial
Authorities to have the power to allow retail shops in their
district to remain open on Easter Sunday. Veiw Members Bill Explanatory
note HERE
The later, has been passed by parliament to select committee for
hearing and submissions. The former is to be debated and expected
to be passed to committee by the end of May.
What's going to happen
Although the bills have similar principles they are different in
application and outcome.
The presentation of these bills, whatever the outcome, will have a
significant effect on members trading, employment issues and the
community at large. Whilst they are somewhat different in content
the presentation of them allows submissions, debate and an
opportunity to amend the final outcome in favour of member’s
wishes.
In order to help us in forming a possible submission your
Chamber is inviting persons interested in commenting on the
proposed changes. We also encourage individuals and businesses to
submit direct.
