Employment Relations (Probationary Employment) Amendment Bill This Bill has been introduced by Dr Wayne Mapp and is currently before select committee. Submissions are being sort and close May 20th In order to consider a possible submission Chamber Southland is interested in hearing from members who wish to make comments that could assist us. In order to submit on time we can take comment until by May 16th. Survey below. This Bill will introduce a 90-day probation period for new employees in the Employment Relations Act 2000. Some reasoning - The purpose of a probation period for new employees is to enable employers to take a chance with new employees, without facing the risk of expensive and protracted personal grievance procedures. It will enable people who have not had previous work experience to find their first job and make it easier for people re-entering the workforce. This will enable greater growth and productivity in the New Zealand economy. New Zealand is one of only two OECD countries that does not have a probation period for new employees.
